Jr. Orange Bowl 49th International Tennis Championship Round 3 Results
(CORAL GABLES, DEC 20, 2010) – Henrik Wiersholm of Kirkland, Wash., scored the day's biggest upset in the boys 14 & under Monday in the third round of the 49th Junior Orange Bowl Tennis Championship.
Wiersholm upended second-seeded Bastian Malla of Chile in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Malla was one of two top-ranked players to fall victim to upstarts, as ninth-seeded Lautaro Pane of Argentina fell in three sets to Russia's Alexandr Chepelev, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Top-seeded Joshua Sapwell of Great Britain continued to impress with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Latvia's Arturs Lazdins. Another player from Great Britain, Alexander Sendegaya, continued his quiet ascent with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Russia's Alexander Zverev.
“I hit my backhand really well, and I picked the right time as far as coming to the net and being aggressive,” Sendegaya said. “My shot selection really helped. Every match that you play obviously gives you confidence for the next round.”
Sendegaya and Chepelev will be matched up in Tuesday's round of 16, while Sapwell will face Miami's Javier Restrepo. Ninth-seeded Omar Salman of Belgium dropped straight sets to Austria's Lucas Miedler, 6-4, 6-3.
In the girls 14 & under, No. 1 seed Barbara Haas of Austria had another dominant performance, this time cruising past Great Britain's Lana Rush, 6-1, 6-1. A pair of upsets featured fourth-ranked Ulyana Ayzatulina and No. 7 Valeria Patiuk succumbing to Brooke Withrow and Mayar Ahmed, respectively.
Many of the top seeds in the boys and girls U12 brackets moved on. In the former, Maryland's Michael Mmoh, Japan's Hayato Kudo, and Sweden's Mikael Wondwosen were among the No. 1s who qualified for Tuesday's Round of 16.
The girls U12 draw featured a surprise with China's Shilin Xu knocking off a top-ranked player in Russia's Anastasia Nefedova, 7-6(3), 6-0. In the quarterfinal round Xu will take on fellow unranked player Julia Payola of Spain.
The round of 16 will be played on Tuesday at the following four venues: boys 14 & under (University of Miami Tennis Center), girls 14 & under (Biltmore Tennis Center), boys 12 & under (Tropical Park Tennis Center), and girls 12 & under (Salvadore Park).
