Jr. Orange Bowl 49th International Tennis Championship Quarterfinal Results
(CORAL GABLES, DEC 21, 2010) – It was a double dose of action on Tuesday at the Junior Orange Bowl, as three main draws played the round of 16 and the quarterfinals and the girls 12 & under completed the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds.
With scheduling altered due to Saturday's rainout, fans got to see twice the action. In the boys 14 & under, top-seeded Joshua Sapwell of Great Britain rallied from the brink of elimination to fend off New York's Noah Rubin in the third set of their quarterfinal match.
Rubin dominated the opening set 6-1 and held a 5-4 advantage in the second set before Sapwell stormed back to take it 7-5. In the third set, Rubin was forced to retire with leg cramps trailing 4-1, and Sapwell advanced. He will take on Chile's Christian Garin in Wednesday's quarterfinals.
Garin, seeded eighth, earned a hard-fought, 6-2, 6-4 victory over ninth-seeded Filippo Baldi of Italy in their quarterfinal duel.
“I felt so good today,” Garin said. “I had to play two matches, so to win both is a great feeling.” Garin ousted Austria's Lucas Miedler in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, while Sapwell defeated Miami's Javier Restrepo, 6-4, 6-2 in his round of 16 game.
Third-seeded Peter Ashley of Great Britain fell to Croatia's Borna Coric in the round of 16, 7-5, 6-4, then Coric went on to beat Russia's Alexandr Chepelev, 6-4, 6-3 in the quarters.
On the girls U14 side of things, Austria's Barbara Haas continued to live up to her top-seeded billing, downing Great Britain's Katie Boulter, 6-3, 6-4, then overwhelming Egypt's Mayar Ahmed in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-0.
Also in that bracket, Indianapolis' Brooke Austin, seeded sixth, edged No. 2 Francoise Abanda of Canada, 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.
Semifinal matches in the boys 12 & under will feature two No. 1 seeds and two unseeded players. Top-ranked Mikael Wondwosen of Sweden and Michael Mmoh of Maryland advanced in straight sets over Chile's Maximiliano Rojas and Arizona's Nathan Ponwith, respectively.
In Wednesday's semifinals of the boys U12, Wondwosen will take on Mmoh and Chicago's Michael Kusznerko will face Korea's Chan Yeong Oh.
Girls U12 will conclude tomorrow with the final between top-seeded Yulia Bryzgalova of Russia and Massachusetts' Nicole Frenkel. Bryzgalova edged Spain's Julia Payola in the semis, 7-6(5), 7-5, while Frenkel also advanced in straight sets, defeating Katarina Jokic 6-1, 6-2.
The three semifinal rounds will be played at the University of Miami Tennis Center on Wednesday, while the girls 12 & under final will be played at Salvadore Park.
