2004 Girls' Basketball Tournament Recap
The Cardinal O'Hara Lady Lions, with tournament MVP Amy Gillespie leading the scoring with 18 points and Heather Scanlon dominating the boards with 13 rebounds, finally shook off 2003 defending champions West Springfield High School with a hard-fought 47-43 win to claim the 2004 Junior Orange Bowl Girls Basketball Classic title. O'Hara had pulled out to a seemingly safe 8 point spread with just over a minute to play, only to see West Springfield score 6 points in 30 seconds to show they weren't giving up their title without a fight to the finish. O'Hara knocked down two insurance free throws to secure the win and run out the clock and secure the lock on a title in their first visit to Miami and the Junior Orange Bowl Classic. Tournament MVP Gillespie was joined on the All Tournament Team by teammate Heather Scanlon, Laura Haskins and Katie Chesley, both from West Springfield, Shantavia Hampton from Miami Senior, and Scarlett Williams from Paul VI.
Miami Senior topped Paul VI 62-53 for Third Place honors. Philadelphia Central, with 5 players in double figures, ran away from Dade Christian 71-52 to come out of the consolation bracket with Fifth Place. Miami Sunset topped Hialeah 49-39 for Seventh Place.
